Group Volunteer Activities

Linen Sorting


(available starting May 2024)
Location
: Onsite PDX, Westside, Gresham (Wednesdays only)
Time: Wed, Thurs, Fri starting at 5 or Saturday between 10 and 3
(Can also schedule at Gresham location on Wednesdays between 10 and 3)
Budget: $0
Group size: 2 – 15
Recommended age: 13+

Help us sort through donated linens to check for quality, measure, and bundle up for clients to take home for a good night’s rest in their new home.

Furniture Building

Location: Offsite (at your business or other location) or
Onsite PDX, Westside, Gresham (Wednesdays only)
Time: Offsite – any day of the week
Onsite – Wed, Thurs, Fri starting at 5 or Saturday between 10 and 3
(Can also schedule at Gresham location on Wednesdays between 10 and 3)
Budget: $100+
Group size: 2 – 12
Recommended age: 16+

  • Businesses or groups will work with their members to gather funds and purchase new, in demand furniture items. (Ex: multipurpose storage w/4 drawers, dresser, desk, book shelf)
  • OR, if building onsite at CW, the group can donate funds for CW to purchase ahead of time online (at least 3 weeks notice needed to allow for shipping time.)
  • If building offsite, the group will also need a participant who is able to drop assembled furniture off at a warehouse location (if your group plans to put together more than 3 large furniture pieces please reach out to discuss potential options for pickup. While not guaranteed, let’s chat!)
  • Give clients coming to the warehouse an extra special touch by providing something new for them to put in their new home
Welcome Home Kit Assembly

Location: Offsite (at your business or other location,) or Onsite PDX, Westside, Gresham (Wednesdays only)
Time: Offsite – any day of the week
Onsite – Wed, Thurs, Fri starting at 5 or Saturday between 10 and 3
(Can also schedule at Gresham location on Wednesdays between 10 and 3)

Budget: $6 per kit
Group size: 2 – 20
Recommended age: 13+

  1. Purchase these inexpensive items at local discount stores (Dollar Store etc.): Measuring cups & spoons, pot holder, cutting board, gift bag 

(or the group can donate funds for CW to purchase ahead of time online [at least 3 weeks notice needed to allow for shipping time] – supplies can only be purchased online in groups of 24, 48, 72 or 96.)

  1. Get CW Welcome Home postcards from the Volunteer Supervisor
  2. Pack a gift bag with one of each item
  3. Write on and/or decorate the cards with positive, congratulatory messages
  4. Hole punch the corner of each card, string onto gift bag string, and tie them up to make charming packages
  5. Coordinate with Volunteer Supervisor to deliver the “Welcome Home” kits to one of our Warehouse locations in Portland or Tualatin
Fleece Blanket Making

Location: Offsite (at your business or other location,) or Onsite PDX, Westside, Gresham (Wednesdays only)
Time: Offsite – any day of the week
Onsite – Wed, Thurs, Fri starting at 5 or Saturday between 10 and 3
(Can also schedule at Gresham location on Wednesdays between 10 and 3)
Budget: $10 – $20 per blanket (always check for sales and coupons for the craft store!)
Group size: 2 – 15
Recommended age: 7+

The participant group must purchase the fleece yardage depending on the number of volunteers. (One person can make 1-2 blankets per hour.)

These blankets always fly off our shelves and clients will appreciate having these cozy, comfy touches to curl up with in their new home.

Host a Collection Drive

Another great option to support our furniture bank is by hosting a collection drive in your neighborhood, workplace, or congregation.

Pop-Up Volunteer Events

Interested in lending a hand and learning about the Community Warehouse mission? Curious about what we do but not able to commit as a regular volunteer? Then pop in to one of our Pop Up Project events! 

Stop in for a few hours to help us with ongoing projects such as linen donation sorting, silverware bundling, furniture building, and more! See the Furniture Bank, meet staff, and learn all about how we turn empty houses into comfy homes.
Event locations alternate every month between our Westside location (9806 SW Tigard St, 97223) and our Portland location (3961 NE MLK Jr Blvd, 97212). Check out our upcoming dates:
