It's high time we had a Volunteer Spotlight to acknowledge all of our fabulous regular volunteers and the great work they do each week. We're excited to bring you a new column that shines a little light into the lives of the people who help keep this place up and running.

Meet this week's volunteer.....*drumroll*.....

Mike Street

Just call him the Warehouse handy-man. If it's broke, he'll fix it!

Mike has volunteered at the Warehouse for 8 (maybe 9?)

years now. Wow.

Okay, let's get to know Mike
just a bit...

1. How did you first hear about the Warehouse?

I dropped off some furniture when we moved. Not at this location though, two
Warehouses ago. I started out working in the Estate Store, then one day the
former repair lady didn't show and I sort of just assumed her job.

2. If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

    Dependable. Innovative. Handy.

3. What's your favorite past time outside of the Warehouse?

Probably fishing. We have a house on the coast.

4. With so many volunteer opportunities out there, why do you choose to
    help the Warehouse?

I can pick my own hours and I enjoy doing what I'm doing. Before I started
doing this, I'd never repaired a piece of furniture in my life. It's rewarding; I
enjoy it. They're also serving a real community need here, which is rewarding
    in and of itself.

5. What is the most interesting item you've come across at the
    Warehouse?

A little cigar humidor, we fixed it up and sold it in the Estate Store. It was
    pretty funky.

6. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?

James Bond, he always gets the girl.

7. Tell us one thing the Warehouse staff and other volunteers don't
    know about you?

I worked in Africa for 6 years; I was working for the carter center, in a
program called the Guinea Worm Eradication Program in Nigeria and
Uganda. Nigeria's quite the interesting place.

Our summer intern Abby will be making her way around to all of our volunteers for spotlight interviews. It's voluntary (of course!) but if you are a regular volunteer and are interested, feel free to reach out to abby@communitywarehouse.org. Thanks!

Big shout out to the folks who joined us for our first annual Pedalpalooza Thrift Ride!

We started at Reviva on Dekum and MLK, rolled down 9th to ReRun, then biked up 7th to Morris where we cut over to Vintage by the Pound and SCRAP on Stanton and MLK. Finally, we leisurely rolled up to Community Warehouse on Shaver and MLK and celebrated with some treasure hunting at The Garage Sale and Estate Store. Very sweet ride. We were blessed with sunshine and fun folks!

Above: The Pedalpalooza crew ended at The Garage Sale Store on MLK. Kids Richie and Akeke sport the new duds they found at Vintage by the Pound!

Roz & the Warehouse Win Portland Peace Prize

Madison Peace Studies Class Announces Roz and Warehouse as Portland Peace Prize Winner

Portland Peace Prize is a student-organized project that Madison High School's Peace Studies class developed in honor of their studies of Nobel Peace Prize winners.

After reading novels about barriers to peace and justice, the students searched for nominees who are breaking down barriers to peace, justice, democracy, and sustainability in our community, much like the efforts of the Nobel Peace Prize winners. They then selected a winner from a pool of inspiring individuals.

The Portland Peace Prize ceremony was held at the Mercy Corps Action Center on May 23, and culminated in the the announcement of this year's winner, Roz Babener. The students presented Roz with a very nice plaque which you will now find at the Warehouse (today, it was hiding out on the blankets shelf in the linen area!)

Century Hotel Donates Nice End Table Lamps

Special thanks to Charlie Sitton with
Century Hotel in Tualatin, who donated
50+ lamps to the Westside Warehouse

" The lamps are a fantastic donation.
They are in great condition, and it's a really nice change of pace from having zero lamps to give people."

- Joe Longfellow, Westside Program
  Manager

Thanks again Charlie for your
generous donation!

Last week sure was a bright one for the Warehouse. Shortly after the lamp donation on the Westside, a huge donation of energy efficient lightbulbs came through our Eastside doors from ECOVA! Ecova is a total energy and stability management company and has contributed to the Warehouse in numerous ways including hosting a Community Collects Drive and sending their employees out for a Volunteer Day at the Warehouse.

We rarely have new lightbulbs to give away to families along with lamps....let alone really nice ones. It's safe to say this will brighten many people's day (and weeks to come.) Thank you Ecova.

Great day for Warehouse outreach this past Saturday at the Tualatin Home Improvement Show!

We were grateful for excellent weather, a beautiful venue, and the opportunity to table alongside some of the best contractors and businesses in this region. Special thanks to the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce for hosting this event and letting us be a part for the second year in a row.

We also handed out some snazzy Estate Store coupons to encourage summer shoppers to swing by our stores. They generate almost 1/3

of the Warehouse's operating budget, so we are doing our best to keep the Enterprise branch of the Warehouse growing and thriving!

If you know someone who is remodeling or moving and might be looking for that perfect sofa, armoire, or living room chair, don't forget to recommend

the Estate Store.

Thanks to a very generous donor this is the second great old sofa we've gotten this week. It is a Mahogany frame Chippendale style sofa, probably dating in the 1830-1860 range. It is upholstered in a camel colored fabric and has an extra bolster pillow. It is in good condition and measures 72 inches wide, 36" deep and 33" tall to the
top of the back. It is currently at the Estate Store West in Tualatin.
