Thomas Hughes

"GOOD KNIGHT"

Thomas Hughes’ kinetic sculptures, or “mechanical theatres” as they are known, invite participation. By drawing a pull, spaces are revealed behind curtains for display of personal objects. Besides the engineering for the movements, the series involves carved birds and carved organic forms, with colors derived from the use of milk paints. Milk paint colors are flat in sheen and earthy in color base, with under colors exposed by rubbing through the top color.

Thomas is a general contractor, furniture maker, and a maker of folk-inspired kinetic sculptures. He has lived in Oregon since 1977, first on the North Oregon Coast, and more recently, in Portland. Thomas’ work is on display at the Brian Marki Gallery in NE Portland.
