Donna and Ed LaPlante are two of the original CHAIR AFFAIR+ artists, now in their fifth year. They enjoy creating these projects not only because they support Community Warehouse, but because it stretches their creativity beyond the normal day-to-day projects. Using a combination of wood, metal and glass, their collaborative work often incorporates techniques learned from their sign, graphics and glass business background: sandblasting, welding, screenprinting and kiln-formed glass.
One of their past years’ chairs incorporated 200 fused glass scrabble pieces. Another was a 30-inch high “wacky” glass house complete with wood fenced yard. Yet another was an entire room created from glass: fringed rug, chairs, furniture and even a fireplace. Last year’s entry was titled “Chairway to Heaven” and highlighted formed metal chairs ascending a column topped by a glass chair with wings and a heart.
As owners of Magnetic Sign Company, Donna and Ed have been supporting Community Warehouse by providing building and vehicle signage. They also operate Confusion Art Studio, a kiln-formed glass studio specializing in lighting sconces, cabinet hardware and home decor.
